Statement on Vandalism at Boil Yard
Crystal River, Florida Release: September 6, 2023. For Immediate Release.
Today, the LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus of the Nature Coast Region (NCR LGBTQ+ Dems), which represents the LGBTQ+ Community to the Democratic Party in Citrus, Hernando and Sumter Counties, issued the following statement in regard to vandalism that occurred at Boil Yard during their monthly drag show: "The Boil Yard has rented out their space for a monthly drag show for three years without incident until last night. The vandalization of the owner's vehicle was a terrible act of violence meant to instill fear. The Boil Yard closes every Tuesday and specifically hosts this event on the first Tuesday for the protection and safety of performers and attendees alike. This 18+ event that has become wildly popular with local residents. "MAMA" Savannah Georgia, a Citrus County resident, has been the host of Drag Bingo at the Boil Yard since its inception. "MAMA” has been performing drag for over 30 years around the country and last night's show is the first time that she's been scared for her and the other performers lives. "
Nathan Sharp, President of the NCR LGBTQ+ Dems said, "Hate should have no place in our community and we urge Crystal River Mayor Joe Meek and Citrus BOCC Chairwoman Ruthie Schlabach to publicly speak out about this horrible incident. Our elected officials must take a leadership role in preventing this type of activity from escalating to physical violence against the LGBTQ+ community and our allies in Citrus County. Despite claims from residents in a local Facebook Group, LGBTQ+ humans have always been residents of Citrus County. We urge Sheriff Mike Prendergast to investigate this as a hate crime."
