Statement on the passing of SB 254 by the Florida House
Crystal River, Florida Release: April 19, 2023. For Immediate Release.
Today, the LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus of the Nature Coast Region (NCR LGBTQ+ Dems), which represents the LGBTQ+ Community to the Democratic Party in Citrus, Hernando and Sumter Counties, is disgusted and dismayed by the passage of SB 254 Treatments for Sex Reassignment by the Florida House. The version of the bill amended by the Florida House goes further than the destructive language of the Senate version by banning commercial insurance from covering gender-affirming care for all Floridians and preventing adults who transition from updating their birth certificates. The legislation will also force minors who receive gender-affirming care to begin detransitioning by the end of the year, whereas the Senate version and recent Board of Medicine rule grandfather in minors currently in care to continue their care."
Nathan Sharp, President of the NCR LGBTQ+ Dems, said "Representative Massulo's remarks during his floor debate were not only reprehensible but ignore the research and scientific evidence that respectable medical professionals use to evaluate the medical and psychological necessity of puberty blockers and other treatments for trans kids. In his crusade for culture war clout, my own State Representative is willing to sacrifice the health and well being of trans kids throughout our District and the rest of the state for political gain."
