This week, the Florida Legislature is hearing four bills with serious implications for civil liberties, public accountability, education policy, and government overreach. Each bill is moving through committee now — meaning this is the moment for public input.

Below you’ll find a brief advocacy-focused summary of each bill and direct contact information for the committee members who will decide its fate. If you care about free speech, due process, transparency, or the role of government, now is the time to speak up.

⚖️ SB 1632 (Companion: HB 1471)

Committee: Senate JudiciaryIssue Area: First Amendment, due process, freedom of association

Why this matters:SB 1632 gives Florida politicians sweeping authority to designate organizations as “domestic terrorist organizations” and punish individuals for speech, beliefs, or association — even without a federal designation or criminal conviction. The bill creates a framework where political officials can decide which ideas are acceptable, opening the door to criminal penalties and retaliation against dissent.

This is a direct threat to the First Amendment, due process, and freedom of association.

🏥 HB 743

Committee: House Health Professions & Programs SubcommitteeIssue Area: Health policy, professional regulation, state oversight

Why this matters:HB 743 makes changes to how health professions and programs are regulated in Florida. While framed as administrative or procedural, bills in this space often have far-reaching impacts on patient access, professional autonomy, and how political priorities influence healthcare decision-making.

Advocates should be watching closely for overreach, politicization of care, or restrictions that undermine evidence-based practice.

📚 SB 824

Committee: Senate Education Pre-K-12Issue Area: Education policy, public school governance

Why this matters:SB 824 continues a legislative trend of shifting control away from educators, parents, and local communities, while increasing top-down mandates. Bills in this committee often carry downstream effects for classroom autonomy, curriculum, and student protections.

🔍 SB 1642 (Companion: HB 641)

Committee: Senate Governmental Oversight & AccountabilityIssue Area: Government transparency, accountability, public power

Why this matters:SB 1642 is the Senate companion to HB 641, which has already advanced on the House side. As it moves through the Senate, advocates should be focused on whether this bill expands government power without sufficient safeguards, weakens oversight, or limits public accountability.
