Today marks the opening of Florida’s 2026 Legislative Session, and once again LGBTQ+ Floridians are entering a process that too often treats our lives as political bargaining chips rather than matters of dignity, safety, and freedom.
As we have documented through our 2026 legislation tracking, this session is already shaping up to include proposals that would further erode civil rights, restrict access to health care, weaken public education, and silence communities that dare to push back. These bills are not isolated ideas. They are part of a coordinated effort to roll back hard-won progress and entrench power by targeting those with the least political protection.
The Nature Coast Region LGBTQ+ Democrats are entering this session clear-eyed and organized. We are watching every committee stop, every amendment, and every vote. We are lifting up legislation that expands opportunity, protects bodily autonomy, strengthens public education, and affirms that LGBTQ+ Floridians belong in every part of public life. And we will not hesitate to call out legislation that harms our community or undermines democratic accountability.
This work does not stop at the Capitol doors. What happens in Tallahassee ripples directly into Citrus, Hernando, and Sumter Counties. That is why our focus remains on education, advocacy, and building local power that lasts beyond a single session.
